What Is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy approach that helps people heal from distressing experiences, trauma, and emotionally overwhelming events. EMDR was developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, and decades of research now support its effectiveness in treating PTSD, anxiety, depression, phobias, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other challenges.
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation—usually through guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones—to activate both sides of the brain. This helps the brain process stuck or unhelpful memories, reduce emotional intensity, and create healthier beliefs around difficult experiences.
Many clients find that EMDR allows them to move through trauma more efficiently than talk therapy alone. Some concerns may shift quickly, while others take several sessions depending on the complexity of the issue. Throughout the process, you remain fully aware, in control, and supported.
